<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rush Mine Level Trail (2.8 miles as out-and-back) in the lower district of the Buffalo National River (Marion County) is an enjoyable mildly challenging hike through a former mining area.</p>

<span id="more-39683"></span>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rush is a former mining community that existed along the Buffalo River that was originally established for the mining of zinc ore in the mountains there. Now it is an old ghost town with no current residents. However, many historic sites remain with structures dating back to the 1880’s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To get to the Mine Level Trail, you first need to go to the <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/rush-morning-star-interpretive-loop-buffalo-river/">Morning Star Interpretive Loop</a>, a short loop trail which can give you a feel for the history of this area. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the top of the loop is the start of the Rush Mine Level Trail. (There may not be any signage here.) This trail is a mostly level stretch that takes you by several of the old zinc mine entrances.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Getting to the Rush Morning Star Trailhead</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To get to the Rush Historic District, take Highway 14 south from Yellville. After about 10 miles, there will be a sign that clearly marks the left-hand turn to Rush. Turn here, and follow the paved road all the way down the hill to the river area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Morning Star Trailhead will be on your left, just after a row of abandoned old buildings. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hike </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rush Mine Level Trail (also considered part of the Rush Mountain Loop Trail) starts at about the midway point (and the high point) of the Morning Star Loop, and it heads straight uphill. (There may be no signage at this junction.) This is a pretty steep climb, but it is definitely worth the effort.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After about a one-fifth-mile climb, the trail levels out. Stay on the well-traveled main trail which turns right. (Don’t take the small, unmarked path to the left. It is a primitive unofficial trail section that completes the loop back from the Monte Christo area.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From here, the trail is mostly pretty level with a few ups and downs, but it is easy to follow. There are at least seven old mine sites along the trail. They are remnants of the former Rush zinc ore mining industry. (For safety reasons, the mines are all closed to public access by fencing and grates.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you pass the last of the mines on this trail, the trail will follow an old road bed down the hill. At one point, the main trail heads left off the old road trace. Take the trail to the left, and it will head off into the woods (straight will take you to the main entrance road).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39802" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-046.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Rush Mine Level Trail. (Photo by Mike Newman.)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At around 1.3 miles, the trail hits an intersection.&nbsp;Turn to the right here to head to the Rush Landing parking area. There is a pit toilet here with a river access nearby. (If you went left, you would go to the &nbsp;Monte Cristo Trail&nbsp;which can loop you back to the starting point, but please read my overview of that trail before doing so).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the Rush Landing area, you can head back to the starting point via the trail making it about a 2.8-mile hike. Or for an easier walk, you can simply take the main road back to the Morningstar Trailhead area. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39801" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-065.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Rush Mine Level Trail. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Notes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I rate the difficulty of the trail as mildly challenging (2 of 5). </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The difference between the maximum and minimum elevation points is only about 180 feet. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For footwear, I recommend trail runners or tennis shoes. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim Ernst discusses this trail in his book, <em>Buffalo River Hiking Trails.</em> His profile discusses the entire Rush Mountain Loop Trail.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Morning Star Interpretive Loop</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Park at the Morning Star Trailhead. It is the first parking area on the road. It is on the left, just past the row of old buildings on the right.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Morning Star Interpretive Loop starts to the left. It first passes an old smelter that dates back to 1886. It is the oldest structure in Rush.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next up the trail are the remains of an old livery barn that was built in the 1890’s. The trail then passes an old blacksmith shop and the remains of the Morning Star processing mill, and several other old ruins. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After about 400 feet in, when you are in the higher part of the loop, you will notice a trail that takes off to the right going uphill. Keep straight to complete the loop. Going to your right would take you to the <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/rush-mine-level-trail-buffalo-river-3-mi-ob/">Mine Level Trail.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further on the loop, there is a great view through the trees of the old ghost-town houses and general store that are on the other side of the road.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39869" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2021-05-30-buffalo-rush-012.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><figcaption>Morning Star Interpretive Loop, Buffalo National River. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Notes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This little loop has a lot of history and reading. It is worth taking the time to read the plaques to learn about the history of the area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The elevation change on this short path is only about 40 feet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The posted photos are from our hike on October 23, 2011. (The photos by Mike Newman were taken on May 30, 2021.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This beautiful 3-mile loop at Buffalo Point Campground in the Buffalo National River near Yellville (Marion County, Ark.) is a must-see trail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Rockhouse Trail is wonderfully scenic with many great points of interest including sculpted bedrock, a waterfall, a former zinc mine, and the Indian Rockhouse Cave.</p>

<span id="more-30751"></span>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is a vigorous hike with about 400 feet of elevation change, but it is well worth it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Getting to the Indian Rockhouse Trail at Buffalo Point</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buffalo Point Campground is the most developed campground in the Buffalo National River. Built during the Depression, it was Buffalo River State Park From 1938 to 1972,</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To get there from the north, take Highway 412 to Yellville, and then take Highway 14 heading east (really south). After 14 miles, take a left onto Highway 268. (Watch for the park signs on Highway &nbsp;14. Wild Bill&#8217;s Outfitter is right there.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If heading from central Arkansas, take I-40 to Conway, then get on Highway 65 heading north. Stay on 65 for 64 miles to Marshall. Then take Highway 27 north to Harriet where you turn left (west) onto Highway 14.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">9 miles later, take a right on Highway 268 at Wild Bill&#8217;s Outfitter. (Watch for the park signs.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Highway 268 takes you into Buffalo Point Campground.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At about 1.5 miles, the Ranger Station is on the right.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trailhead parking is on the right about 1 mile further up the road. This is the same parking area (with picnic tables) for the <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/buffalo-point-overlook-trail-loop-buffalo-river-1-mi/">Overlook Trail</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hike: Trailhead to Indian Rockhouse</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30754" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-010.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Indian Rockhouse Trail, Buffalo Point Campground (Buffalo National River)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trail starts directly across the road from the parking/picnic area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the elevation high point for the trail. You will be descending 400 feet by the time you reach Panther Creek.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Elevation-wise, there are 3 sections of the trail: (1) the downhill stretch from the trailhead (the high point) until Panther Creek (400 feet lower) at about .8 miles; (2) the area along Panther Creek including the spur out to Indian Rockhouse Cave; and (3) the return uphill climb (350 feet) from Panther Creek on the last .8 miles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trail starts out heading downhill to the northwest and then makes a right turn (turning northeast) at around .1 miles and continues the descent.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Sinkhole Icebox&nbsp;&#8211; .3 miles.</span></strong> There is a cool sinkhole here on the left (estimated 50 yards wide).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the Ozarks has karst typography which results in a large number of caves, sinkholes, and underground springs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here there is a large and fairly deep sinkhole right next to the trail. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Be careful not to fall in.</span> You may notice cool air arising from the hole.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030-400x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30755" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030-400x600.jpg 400w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030-100x150.jpg 100w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030-233x350.jpg 233w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-030.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a><figcaption>Indian Rockhouse Trail, Buffalo Point Campground (Buffalo National River)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a beautiful and nicely maintained trail. A lot of the downhill/uphill stretches (like in this area) feature nice stone staircases.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Waterfall &#8211; .6 miles.</strong></span>&nbsp;At this point (about 300 feet lower in elevation), there is a beautiful waterfall area. The falls is an estimated 25 feet high.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this scenic area, the trail curves and goes by the bottom of the waterfall. After making a sharp turn by the waterfall, the trail follows along the bottom of a beautiful bluff-line.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30758" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-067.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Stream along the trail between the waterfall and the zinc mine.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, during wet season, there is a very pretty stream that flows downhill along quite a bit of this part of the trail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Zinc Mine &#8211; .7 miles.</strong></span>&nbsp;Here, to your left is what was the entrance to an abandoned zinc mine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the information sign explains, this was an exploratory mine dug into a hillside in an attempt to find zinc. In the late 1800&#8217;s, a lot of people came to this area, especially in the nearby community (now ghost town) of <a href="https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/rush-ghost-town-marion-county-1270/">Rush,</a> for zinc mining.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Panther Creek &#8211; .8 miles.</strong></span> &nbsp;Here, the trail finally reaches the end of the big descent to Panther Creek.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trail makes a left turn to the northwest. The next .3 miles or so is one of the prettiest stretches of the trail as it follows right next to Panther Creek (on its south side).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30761" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-089.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Panther Creek and the trail.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, this stretch is at its prettiest during wet times as you get the sights and sounds of the creek next to the trail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Indian Rockhouse Junction &#8211; 1.1 miles.</strong></span> Here, the trail continues on ahead onto the spur that heads to the Indian Rockhouse Cave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the sign indicates, you can make a left turn here to bypass the cave. Don&#8217;t take the bypass. You would miss the best part of the trail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is about a half-mile further to the cave.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30764" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-134.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Indian Rockhouse Cave.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Indian Rockhouse Cave and More</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Indian Rockhouse Cave -1.7 miles.</strong></span>&nbsp;This is a huge beautiful bluff cave. Photos definitely do not do it justice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the cool things of this amazing natural structure is the stream flowing at the back of the cave. I have done this trail multiple times, and regardless of how dry it has been outside, I have always been able to hear the stream flowing in the back of this overhang cave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to archeologists who have excavated the cave, it was in use by Native Americans hundreds of years before European explorers came into the area. (Check <a href="https://archeology.uark.edu/ozarkbluffshelters/learn-more/visit-a-shelter/indian-rockhouse-cave-on-panther-creek-in-the-buffalo-national-river/">this Arkansas Archeological Survey site</a> for more info.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After you have enjoyed Indian Rockhouse Cave, turn around and head back (now heading southeast) on the spur trail you took to the cave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">About .2 miles ahead, the spur forks. Take the right branch to continue back toward the main loop. (There should be a sign here that says &#8220;Return Trail.&#8221; Head that way.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the next .3 miles, the trail follows close to some very pretty parts of Panther Creek.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30766" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-170.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Sculpted bedrock on the Indian Rockhouse Trail.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Sculptured Bedrock &#8211; 1.9 miles.</strong> </span>&nbsp;This is a very scenic area both for the naturally sculpted rock formation (from many years of gradual erosion) and the beauty of the &nbsp;water flowing over it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t be confused and think that the trail crosses the creek here. It does not. Continue on the trail along the south side of the creek.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30770" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-079.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Natural Bathtub, Indian Rockhouse Trail, Buffalo Point Campground (Buffalo National River).</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Natural Bathtub &#8211; 2.2 miles.</strong></span>&nbsp;At around 2.2 miles, the trail is back to the main loop. Make a right turn here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shortly, you will be at a really cool sculpted rock area in the shape of a round bathtub.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trial then continues on a gradual uphill climb.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30767" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-06-03-buffalo-196.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Stream along the Indian Rockhouse Trail, Buffalo Point Campground (Buffalo National River)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Up ahead, the trail crosses a small stream and then follows parallel to that stream for a quarter-mile (for another very nice stretch during wet times) as it heads uphill.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the Natural Bathtub to the trail end (mostly heading south), there is about a 350-foot elevation climb.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love going up and down hills as it makes for a more interesting hike, both visually and physically. But this is definitely the most demanding part of the hike.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049-650x433.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-30769" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-10-16-buffalo-point-049.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Cool rock formations on the last (west) stretch of the trail.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the things I like about hillside trails is that you frequently get cool rock formations. There are a number of interesting rocks and boulders on the climb back to the trailhead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Quarry Spur -2.8 miles.</strong></span>&nbsp;At this spot (where it looks like the trail is joining a road trace), there is a short spur to the left to the quarry area where rocks were dug when the park was built during the 1930&#8217;s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At about 3 miles, you will walk through a wooden fence and be back at Highway 268.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a left, and then it is just a short walk back to the trailhead.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Notes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like most trails that go along seasonal streams, it is a prettier hike during wetter times with the water is flowing. But it is still a very pretty trail any time of year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although there are not a lot of blazes, by and large, it is pretty easy to follow the this trail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian Rockhouse Trail is a very frequently walked trail, and it is nicely maintained.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t expect any cell signal on the hike. I probably had 10% or less AT&amp;T cell signal on the hike. The only signal I had was in the highest points near the trailhead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These photos are mostly from my hike on June 3, 2017. A few are from my October 16, 2016 hike.</p>
