<p>Fuzzybutt Falls (southwest Searcy County, Ozark National Forest) is a waterfall that I&#8217;ve always heard about (mostly because of the name) but had no idea what a great, easy hike it is&nbsp;to get to&nbsp;with a lot of bang for your buck along the way.</p>
<p>The hike, most of which is in the Richland Creek Wilderness, takes you by three waterfalls, follows along Falling Water Creek (one of my favorites) and ends at a great canyon with a uniquely named 16-foot waterfall that will definitely create a memorable experience.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28806" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28806" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28806" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5-650x433.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="650" height="433" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-5.jpg 1996w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28806" class="wp-caption-text">Fuzzybutt Falls and surrounding canyon</figcaption></figure></p>
<p><span id="more-28781"></span></p>
<h2>Getting There</h2>
<p>Take Highway 7 to the community of Pelsor (halfway between Jasper and Dover) and turn east&nbsp;onto Highway 16. Travel 10 miles on Highway 16 (past the Pedestal Rocks Special Interest Area and the community of Ben Hur) and then turn left onto Forest Road 1205.</p>
<p>There is currently no road sign here, but there are signs for&nbsp;&#8220;Falling Water Horse Camp.&#8221; So turn at the road toward the horse camp.</p>
<p>Travel 5.3 miles down this gravel road, and it will cross a bridge over Falling Water Creek. (At 2.3 miles, you will pass <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/west-ark/falling-water-falls/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Falling Water Falls</a>.) Cross the bridge and park in the parking area on the other side.</p>
<p>For approximate Google Maps directions from your location to the parking area, see <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/dir//35.7527219,-92.938415/@35.7535243,-92.943745,1585m/">this link</a>.</p>
<h2>The Trail</h2>
<p>After parking, cross back over the bridge and enter into the woods on a horse trail on the west side of the creek. The horse trail is marked with green blazes (at least, the early part of the trail is).</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28808" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28808" style="width: 400px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28808" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7-400x600.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="400" height="600" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7-400x600.jpg 400w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7-100x150.jpg 100w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7-233x350.jpg 233w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-7.jpg 533w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28808" class="wp-caption-text">Small, unnamed waterfall along the trail to Fuzzybutt Falls</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The trail takes off to the right and into the woods. The trail follows along the creek for a bit. At a little past .2, the trail enters the Richland Creek Wilderness.</p>
<p>At about .4 miles, the trail crosses a smaller creek and a small waterfall. If you bushwhack up this creek to the left, you will eventually get to Horsetail Falls. It&#8217;s not a far hike, but a challenging bushwhack. To the right is a little spur trail that takes you to a nice spot to check out Falling Water Creek.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28803" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28803" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28803" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2-650x433.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="650" height="433" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-2.jpg 1996w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28803" class="wp-caption-text">Falling Water Creek</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Back on the main trail, cross over the small creek and continue up the hill on the horse trail. The trail levels out a bit, and then it goes back up the hill a little more steeply and veers further away from Falling Water Creek.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28802" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28802" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28802" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1-650x433.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="650" height="433" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-1.jpg 1996w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28802" class="wp-caption-text">Canyon which holds Fuzzybutt Falls</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The trail then goes back down the hill and toward the creek. At approximately 1 mile, some bluffs will appear on your left. Fuzzybutt Falls is&nbsp;in this canyon.</p>
<p>To get to Fuzzybutt Falls, follow the stream into the canyon about 200 yards in. It&#8217;s an easy hike. Then the falls is right there.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28804" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28804" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28804" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3-650x433.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="650" height="433" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-3.jpg 1996w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28804" class="wp-caption-text">Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Fuzzybutt Falls is 16 feet tall. While not as tall as many other waterfalls, it&nbsp;is particularly photogenic, and the canyon itself is a fantastic setting that gives you the feeling of being in a world all to yourself.</p>
<p>Plan to spend a little time and enjoy the falls and the canyon.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28810" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28810" style="width: 400px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28810" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9-400x600.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="400" height="600" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9-400x600.jpg 400w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9-100x150.jpg 100w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9-233x350.jpg 233w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-9.jpg 533w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28810" class="wp-caption-text">Canyon area near Fuzzybutt Falls</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>You may wonder about the unusual name of Fuzzybutt Falls. Tim Ernst, who is responsible for a lot of the modern-day exploring and documenting of the area (and whose trail guides are a must for any Arkansas hiker), named many of the waterfalls in the area.</p>
<p>Ernst usually takes a picture of himself at the falls (for perspective) and decided on a cold day to take a picture of his backside at the falls. Because the National Park Service labeled the photo &#8220;obscene&#8221; his butt was blurred out of the pic. Thus the name of the falls.</p>
<p>Apparently, a lot of people replicate his photo at the falls. It was cold on my hike, and I&#8217;m a fan of pants, so I just took one of me in my full gear. (See pic at top.)</p>
<p>When you are done exploring, it is time to head back.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll notice on the way back that as the trail turns to the right and back up the hill there is a little spur trail on the left that heads to Falling Water Creek. Be sure to take this spur, as it leads in about 100 yards to<a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/six-finger-falls-on-falling-water-creek-ozark-forest/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Six Finger Falls.</a></p>

<p>Six Finger Falls is a great waterfall along Falling Water Creek that is made up of six smaller waterfalls as they flow through different cracks in the rocks. It really is a unique waterfall. (During high water, the falls can become just one large waterfall)</p>
<p>I had viewed the falls from the east&nbsp;side before, but this was my first time viewing it from the west&nbsp;side.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_28807" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-28807" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-28807" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6-650x433.jpg" alt="Fuzzybutt Falls, Ozark National Forest" width="650" height="433" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BT-2014-12-31-fuzzy-butt-falls-6.jpg 1996w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-28807" class="wp-caption-text">Six Finger Falls</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>You are now ready to head back to the main trail and make the one-mile trek to your car along the horse trail.</p>
<p>This really is a magnificent area and worth spending a day or three at. In addition to Fuzzybutt Falls, Six Finger Falls, and Falling Water Falls, there are several other waterfalls in the area including Horsetail Falls (noted above),&nbsp;<a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/intersection-falls-ozark-forest/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Intersection Falls</a>, and<a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/hike-to-terry-keefe-falls-ozark-forest/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Keefe Falls on the opposite side of the creek.&nbsp;</a></p>
<p>And if you have a little more time, <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/northwest-arkansas/richland-falls/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Richland Falls</a> and <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/northwest-arkansas/twin-falls-richland/" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Twin Falls of Richland&nbsp;</a>are both also nearby.</p>
<h2>Final Notes</h2>
<p>The distance for this hike round trip is about 2 miles. I consider it an easy hike.</p>
<p>For footwear, I recommend trail shoes or tennis shoes.</p>
<p>Tim Ernst mentions this falls in his <em>Arkansas Waterfalls</em>&nbsp;guidebook.</p>
<p>These photos are all from my December 31, 2014 hike.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Getting to the Intersection Falls Bushwhack</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">(These are the same driving directions as for Six Finger Falls.) Take Highway 7 to Pelsor (halfway between Jasper and Dover). Turn east onto Highway 16.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Travel 10 miles on Highway 16, past the Pedestal Rocks Special Interest Area and about 1 mile past the community of Ben Hur. Then turn left onto Forest Road 1205.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is no sign for the Forest Road, but there are signs to &#8220;Falling Water Horse Camp.&#8221; Turn on the road to the horse camp.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow FR 1205 for 5.3 miles and cross a bridge over Falling Water Creek.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">About a half-mile past the bridge, there is a little parking area and a sign board on your left. Park here.</p>

<span id="more-18527"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Finding Intersection Falls</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you get down to Six Finger Falls (see the <a href="https://arkokhiker.org/north-central-ark/six-finger-falls-on-falling-water-creek-ozark-forest/">Six Fingers Falls post</a>), you will want to travel upstream&nbsp;on Falling Water Creek&nbsp;to find Intersection Falls.&nbsp; It is probably about .25 miles upstream.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is no trail. When we were there in the winter, it was easy enough to bushwhack our way upstream along the creek.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This area was full of thorn bushes. In warmer weather, I recommend having water shoes and going along the edge of the creek &#8212; although be very careful during high water.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The key here is to the find the easiest and safest way for you to get there given the conditions.&nbsp; You should not get lost since you follow the Falling Water Creek the entire way. As long as you are beside the creek, you should find the falls and be able to find your way back without a problem</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While there is no trail to this area, it is very pretty along the creek. The crisp, clear water, rock formations, and swimming holes make for first-class scenery.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone is-style-default"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-3-650x433.jpg" alt="As you get close to the falls, there is a great little cascade along Falling Water Creek that dumps into a beautiful clear pool. Cascade. And Intersection Falls in the Distance.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once past the cascade area, you can make your way upstream and get a good look at Intersection Falls. The Falls itself is a 31-foot high falls that tumbles over a ridge and into Falling Water Creek.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After an initial fall, the water then hits the rocks below and fans out giving it a very tropical feel.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone is-style-default"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5-400x600.jpg" alt="Intersection Falls" class="wp-image-18544" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5-400x600.jpg 400w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5-100x150.jpg 100w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5-233x350.jpg 233w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5-67x100.jpg 67w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-5.jpg 1426w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></a><figcaption>Intersection Falls</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you get your fill here, check out the views upstream. Then you can head back to Six Finger Falls where you parked your car.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone is-style-default"><a href="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="650" height="433" src="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2-650x433.jpg" alt="Bluff Line along Falling Water Creek upstream from the falls." class="wp-image-18540" srcset="https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2-650x433.jpg 650w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://arkokhiker.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2013_1231-BT-intersec-falls-2.jpg 1901w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></a><figcaption>Bluff Line along Falling Water Creek upstream from the falls.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Tim Ernst&#8217;s <em>Arkansas Waterfalls</em>, he gives directions from the road to the top of the falls. It&#8217;s tough to get a good view from the top of the falls, so I recommend coming in from downstream for a better view.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for footwear, I recommend hiking boots.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We did this hike on December 31, 2013.</p>
